Was “Joy of Painting”‘s Bob Ross a fair-skinned/mixed brother?
I always thought he was.
Cartoonist Aaron McGruder has messed with my head again.
http://news.yahoo.com/comics/uclickcomics/20060404/cx_bo_uc/bo20060404
Yesterday’s cartoon referred to Bob Ross (“only if they paint landscapes on public tv) – That ‘fro looked natural to me! I always thought he was a mixed fairskinned brother with African heritage. Now that I try and google information about him, I find no evidence of this.
Does anybody here know Bob Ross’s roots?
cyanne – with a name like yours, I should have guessed you would be involved in this question – hehe – do you know what nationality his hair was passed down to him from?
Oh & “white” is not a nationality or any form of roots in my opinion. Does anyone know what the man’s roots were? What countrie(s) his people were from?
He’s white. I knew him personally when I was a child. He is also a recovered alcoholic and a very interesting man.

Why is Aaron McGruder coming to Pittsburgh’s Byham Theatre and what’s he going to do when he gets here?
He’s going to give a talk. The articles about it are all kind of vague on the subject, but presumably he’s going to talk about politics from a liberal point of view, and about black culture (usually to be critical of it) just like he did in his Boondocks comic strip.
If you mean “why” from his perspective, the answer is probably “money” (the tickets aren’t cheap) but it’s also useful to have a soapbox from which to espouse his views.

Aaron Neville – Aaron Neville $15.26 Aaron Neville |

The satirical and edgy comic strip “The Boondocks” created by Aaron McGruder, has two younger brothers from African American downtown Chicago who explore life living with their grandfather in a suburban neighborhood of the city. The strip, which ran in the Union of April 19, 1999-March 26, 2007, was certainly not alien to controversy as “The Boondocks” has regularly received criticism from both, black and white communities with respect to strong left-wing View points. McGruder’s political views are often risqué even in these times.
Aaron McGruder was born in Chicago, Illinois, 29 May 1974, and at the age of six years moved to Columbia, Maryland with his parents and an older brother, where the family set their roots. After attending both a Jesuit and the public school, Aaron eventually came to attend the University of Maryland, where he graduated with a degree in African American Studies.
At the time of “The Boondocks” creation, McGruder was a DJ at radio station WMUC university while also debuted his new comic strip in El Diamante, the campus newspaper, in December ’96. McGruder pulled his strip out of the paper in March of ’97 after a break with the editor, who refused to print an apology for the omission of “The Boondocks ” in a publication because of what they said was a technical error. The strip is moved in the same year to appear on a monthly hip hop called The Source, where he quickly gained popularity and soon was syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate, making his debut in the country two years later, in April.
At its peak, “The Boondocks” was syndicated in over 300 different publications and by the fall of 2003, McGruder asked the help of the artist Jennifer Seng to take over most of the illustrations of the strip, while he focused on the dialogue. Although fans were worried about “The Boondocks” becoming LAME from this change, with no artistic influence McGruder made a point to have a hand in developing every single strip, if only to change a small detail or two, and remained true to his word.
Throughout the life of the Gaza controversy, routinely McGruder was attacked by the public, because he mocked most of the famous people and Orginazations on topics such as terrorism, government, and some well-known figures in the White House, such as Condoleezza Rice and conservative commentator Larry Elder, who figures are in the strip named the recipient of its “most difficult Black Person of the Year Award”, the “Old” later.
In some newspapers, “The Boondocks” was actually published on the Editorial pages instead of in the comics section and McGruder has even received hate messages from people for his viewpoints of the characters in his strip. In late February 2006, Aaron McGruder announced publicly that “The Boondocks” would go on hold for six months from March, and then resume again in October with tapes races appear again in the meantime. More than half of the papers that appeared in chosen to implement new strips instead of repetitions, and on 25 September 2006, the president of Universal Press Syndicate announced that the comic was not coming back, although no explanation or a word to withdraw from the Gaza permanently McGruder was in charge.
